Program Note:

“America runs on Dunkin’, Canada runs on funkin’” – anonymous

funkin’ eh was composed for Stephanie Chua as a part of the inaugural Piano Lunaire Composers’ Symposium. It is the direct result of listening to nothing but Tower of Power, Here Come the Mummies, Parliament-Funkadelic, After Funk, and similar groups for pretty much a year straight.

Setting out to write funkin’ eh, I was looking to capture the rhythmic energy and harmonies of funk music, as seen through the lens of contemporary classical music. The end result is a fiendishly complicated web of syncopations and offset downbeats with endless funky energy that is simultaneously groovy and completely impossible to tap your foot to.
